Basketball Injury Incidence

Basketball has been found to have one of the highest overall injury rates among ‘noncontact’ sports. Foot and ankle injuries (39.7%), and the knee (14.7%), are the most common sites for injury. Whilst knee injuries are less common than foot and ankle injuries they are often more severe, leading to a longer time away from play and possible surgery.

One of the most frequent knee injuries is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. This most commonly occurs when landing from a jump or performing a cutting manoeuvre.

The long-term consequences of ACL injury can be devastating both personally for the player and for the team. Often players and coaches just think about the 6-12month surgery and rehabilitation period, but the consequences are much more severe and can significantly reduce an athlete's career due to instability, pain, osteoarthritic changes and loss of confidence. It is therefore essential that Basketball players and coaches understand how to assess for injury risk factors and reduce the incidence of injury.
