Netball Injury Incidence
Ankle injuries are the most common Netball injury, however it is ACL injuries that are often most severe. They are the commonest cause of prolonged absence from sport with an athlete typically missing 9-12 months of competitive play due to possible surgery and rehabilitation. 60-80% of ACL tears occur in non-contact situations such as landing from a jump, pivoting or sudden deceleration.
The long-term consequences of ACL injury can be devastating both personally for the player and for the team. Often players and coaches just think about the 6-12month surgery and rehabilitation period, but the consequences are much more severe and can significantly reduce an athlete's career due to instability, pain, osteoarthritic changes and loss of confidence. It is therefore essential that Netball players and coaches understand how to assess for injury risk factors and reduce the incidence of ankle and ACL injury.
