The incidence of injury amongst female basketballers is alarming

Women's basketball has the highest frequency of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury when compared to all sports, both male and female.

Female Basketballers sustain nearly twice the frequency of knee injuries compared to males. (18.2% and 10.6% respectively). A particular concern are anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. When compared to male basketballers, females are 3.79 times more likely to rupture their ACL. To protect players and teams from the consequences of this severe injury, it is essential that female basketballers and coaches understand injury risk factors and how to assess for them and how to implement injury prevention strategies.

The graph below demonstrates the alarming frequency of ACL injury in women’s basketball.

Because we are so concerned about the incidence of ACL injury in female Basketballers we are currently involved in a research project with coach Matt Harber, and the Loughborough Cougars at Loughborough University.
